A work belongs to a history. That history is lost when nobody documents it.
At the end of the Second World War, Roger Tonnellier, a former prisoner of war, was called upon by the United States Army to take part in the search for and restitution of works looted by the Nazi regime.
He did not turn it into a story. He passed on a conviction.
That conviction led his son to intellectual property and art law, and then to the restitution of looted works. It led the next generation to art history, engineering and materials science.
IDMETRY grew out of their meeting: the idea that a work should be able to carry on itself, and for good, the verifiable trace of what it is.
