A certificate gets lost. A label comes off. A chip can be removed. A photograph proves very little: it resembles the work, it does not identify it.

A fingerprint is a measurement, not a judgement.
It establishes that a work presented is — or is not — the one measured on a given date. It says nothing about who made it.
Later restoration changes the material locally. That is precisely the point: the comparison does not merely say yes or no, it shows where something changed.
